Remove The Dairy And Meat Industries From The List Of Essential Services

Original discussion here

Thanks to Robert Muldoon, the dairy and meat industries were listed as essential services in which strikes and lockouts were restricted. The designation has been carried over ever since. This is an unjustifiable restriction of the right to strike, and seems to have been put in place primarily to benefit farmers. It should be repealed.

Relevant legislation
Schedule 1 of the Employment Relations Act 2000.

Problems

  • There is unlikely to be a majority for this measure under a National government.
  • Farmers will kick and scream.
