Amend the 2004 Criminal Records (Clean Slate) Act to slate all convictions off your record when they have occurred more than say, 10 years ago for serious offences, perhaps less for lesser misdimeanours.
Once you have completed your sentence or paid off your fine - and thus repaid your debt to society for your crime - why should there be a record of that which hangs over you for the rest of your life? The case of Aaron Amor springs to mind for this: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/opinion/news/article.cfm?c_id=466&objectid=10560405
